The Studio
Perfect for a romantic break, the Photographer’s Studio is one of Edinburgh’s most unusual retreats. Its octagonal shape and domed roof are complemented by a sweeping staircase and an innovatively designed living area, complete with a wood-burning stove and a concealed kitchen.
One bedroom and one bathroom sleep up to two guests, making the studio an intimate hideaway rather than a house for a crowd, though it can also be booked alongside Rock House and the Terrace Apartment for a larger group.
The studio takes its name from Rock House’s history as the working studio of the pioneering photographers David Octavius Hill and Robert Adamson, who in 1843 developed the calotype process here, founding the first photography studio in Scotland. Rock House remained a working photographer’s studio from the 1840s until the 1950s.
Like the rest of the property, the studio enjoys Rock House’s remarkable elevated position on Calton Hill, with panoramic views over Edinburgh and Princes Street just a few minutes’ walk away.
The location is ideal for exploring the city on foot. Old Town and New Town landmarks, including Edinburgh Castle, sit within easy reach, and both the airport tram stop and Waverley station are a five minute walk away. Secure public parking is available at the OMNI Centre a few minutes from the door.
